Description
In the first months of 1862 the West saw the first great Union victories of the Civil War. The capture of Fort Donelson in Febrary opened the Tennessee River to Union gunboats and transports, making a full-scale invasion of the Confederacy possible. The Battle of Pea Ridge in March secured Missouri, and the Battle of Shiloh in April salvaged the Union foothold on the Tennessee-Mississippi border.
