A sus sesenta y cuatro años, Emilia se enfrenta a la remodelación de su cocina. Su marido lo ha decidido por su cuenta y ella, que solo quiere estar tranquila con sus libros, se siente incapaz de oponer resistencia. Bonnett parte de este hecho cotidiano y aparentemente banal para construir una semblanza de la plácida y peligrosa insatisfacción, y de mujeres arrinconadas por muy distintos tipos de maltratos y silencios. El paso del tiempo, su acumulación y su peso, el aburguesamiento y la vejez (propia y ajena), y la imposibilidad de conocer realmente a quienes nos rodean empapan esta novela para obligarnos a mirar donde, a menudo, no queremos mirar: a lo que de verdad somos.

At sixty-four years old, Emilia is facing the remodeling of her kitchen. Her husband has decided on her own and she, who just wants to be calm with her books, feels incapable of resisting. Bonnett starts from this daily and apparently banal fact to build a portrait of placid and dangerous dissatisfaction, and of women cornered by very different types of abuse and silence. The passage of time, its accumulation and its weight, the gentrification and old age (our own and that of others), and the impossibility of really knowing those around us soak up this novel to force us to look where, often, we do not want to look: at what that we really are.
